We present below our preliminary tabulation of reported reproductions of eighteenth century American newspapers. We have complied this list from issues which we have examined personally and others that have been publicized by other dealers and collectors. While this list should not be considered the final listing of all reprints, it does contain all those commonly, and not so commonly, encountered in today's marketplace.
If you have any of these issues, they must be considered spurious unless and until they have been competently authenticated. These early imprints are extremely rare: the originals simply do not turn up in general collector venues, and they can be difficult enough for specialists to uncover in a lifetime of diligent searching. Please bear in mind that only a newspaper specialist dealer, librarian, or collector possesses the knowledge and experience to determine whether your issues are genuine. In my lengthy experience, general antique sellers, book dealers, and local librarians cannot be relied upon to provide informed expert opinion in this field. A good many of these reproductions were printed between 1855 and 1895, so they do look and feel "old". They differ greatly, however, from the originals, chiefly in the type of paper they were printed on, as well as the printing techniques. Most of the reproductions are immediately obvious to the experienced hand and eye. There is simply nothing else that has the feel of eighteenth century hand made rag paper which has been printed upon by hand set type. In general, browned or crumbling paper denotes a reproduction, as does type that seems to float on the surface rather than be deeply embossed in the paper.
